UC Davis senior Matt Hansen finished with two birdies on his way to a 3-under 69 on Monday and will take a five-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round of the Big West Men’s Golf Championship at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.

The second-place Aggies were two shots behind top-seeded Cal State Fullerton after a second round in which both teams shot 3-over 291. Overall, the Titans were 2-over through 36 holes with UCD at 4-over.

For the Aggies, redshirt freshman Nicolas Noya shot a 74 in the second round and was tied for ninth at even par, while El Macero’s Ben Corfee carded a 75 and was tied for 22nd at 6-over. UCD’s Luke Vivolo was tied for 24th at 7-over after his 73 and Joshua Granger was tied for 32nd at 8-over after firing a 75.

Hansen is looking for his second straight individual title and the third of his career. His impressive second round put him in good position at 8-under for the tournament. There was a three-way tie for second at 3-under.

The winner of the Big West Tournament earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships next month.

The five-time defending Big West champion Aggies learned Monday that they will participate in the NCAA’s West Regional in Cle Elum, Washington, beginning next week.

UCD got the 13th seed for the 24-team event, one of three regional tournaments scheduled for May 8-10. It will be played at Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort. The top eight teams and top two players not on an advancing team will move on to the national finals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, May 20-23.

The Aggies are making their sixth regional appearance in seven Division I seasons, and are looking to move on to the finals for the fourth time. UCD’s best national showing was a 16th-place finish last season.

Incoming Aggie hoopster Isaiah Walton capped a successful career at Elyria High (Ohio) by earning a pair of all-county awards along with all-star recognition.

Crossing the 1,000 career-point mark as Elyria’s top player throughout his four-year career, Walton was named All-Lorain County Division I Player of the Year — and got a spot on the all-county first team — after averaging 21.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game this winter.

Due to his success this season under Lorain County Coach of the Year Brett Larrick, Walton also captured Associated Press Division I All-Ohio honorable mention.

On March 30, Walton scored 21 points to lead his all-star squad to victory in the Gene Legeza Cage Classic at Oberlin College. He also finished second in the event’s 3-point contest.

Aggie senior right-hander Evan Wolf tossed a complete-game five-hitter on Sunday, but one of those was a two-out bloop single with the bases loaded in the top of ninth. Those two runs were the difference as UC Irvine edged UCD, 3-1, at Dobbins Stadium.

With the result, the Anteaters (28-14, 11-1 Big West Conference) completed a weekend sweep of the Aggies (17-23, 3-12).

After Wolf struck out two in his first career complete game — retiring 12 straight batters the fourth to eighth innings — the Aggie trio combined to allow just four earned runs in 23 innings against UC Irvine.

The first two runs of the game came in the opening inning, UCD’s tally coming when Adam Young singled in Barker, who had doubled with two outs.

Neither team scored again until Anteater Renae Martinez smacked a two-run single in the ninth. It was just his third hit of the season.

Down 5-0, UCD (17-29, 6-9 Big West Conference) scored first when Cat Guidry singled up the middle, went to second on a walk to Krista Brava, then reached third when Christa Castello put down a sacrifice bunt.

Designated player Lauryn Saunders blasted her fifth home run of the season to make it 5-2 in the fourth inning.

However, that was all the scoring by the Aggies, who next play a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton. A Saturday doubleheader, which begins at 4 p.m., will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Freshman Carla Tocchini and junior Elsie Fullerton, a Davis High graduate, each had hat tricks for the 19th-ranked Aggies, but UCD lost an 11-10 overtime thriller to No. 13 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday in the fifth-place game of the Big West Conference tournament.

A Gaucho goal with 16 seconds left in regulation sent the contest into the extra period, where UCSB eventually sent UCD home with a final season record of 12-19.

Sophomore center Allyson Hansen added two goals for the Aggies, while Paige Oreglia and Keelia Houston — another former Blue Devil — each chipped in one.

UCD women’s gymnastics

Head coach John Lavalle announced Monday that the Aggie program has signed Phoebe Pummarachai to a National Letter of Intent during the spring signing period. The senior at Ayala High School (Chino Hills) joins fall signees Alexis Brown and Miranda Holder in UCD’s 2013-14 recruiting class, and is expected to enroll in the fall of 2014.

Pummarachai previously competed for Gym-Max, where she was a teammate of current Aggie Katy Nogaki, before taking a brief hiatus from gymnastics in 2012. She returned to action as a member of Winners Gymnastics partway into the 2013 season, qualifying for the state, region and junior olympic meets. Pummarachai then repeated that triple in her first full season with Winners this spring.

She captured SoCal titles on vault, beam and the all-around in March, then followed with a third-place all-around showing at the Region I meet earlier in April.

Pummarachai also excels in the classroom with perfect 4.0 GPA. She holds citizenship in Taiwan and Thailand as well as the U.S.
